Dim Sum, and other amazing  meals in Hong Kong

The morning started out with tasty Dim Sum. Lunch was a fantastic Vietnamese spicy beef stew and dinner was amazing Indian food, found in a hidden walkup in TST. All was amazing and all was very affordable. I like this town already.

Kowloon Cultural District – “Our Life in West Kowloon II” exhibit

Went to an exhibit that was closing this weekend. The building was evicted and is being redeveloped, so organizers filled each floor with photographs and installations that highlighted how the living conditions are for poorer residents. One room housed twenty people, all strangers. And another room had one of the infamous cage homes (basically a cage a large as a simple twin-sized bed). It could be called home and locked up when not around. Hong Kong has been getting rid of the Bed cages, but from what I was told they do still exist. The organizers where chronicling the way people live in Kowloon, not the disappearing building. “The spirit of Sham Shui Po exists in the people and their lifestyles, not the buildings..”

Hungry Ghost Festival, Temple

The burning of paper figures are helpful to warding off the hungry spirits. I like this temple shot of 14 day incense coils and the paper maché horse in front of the temple.

Gin and Tonic(s) on Sept. 11

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

Well the end of the day arrived, and I was happy to start making dinner: curried chicken…

I also made a pretty sweet Gin and Tonic, for the first time in many moons. My favorite gin is Tanqueray No. Ten – great with ice, a little lime juice and some tonic water. Little did I know that one gin and tonic would turn out to be many…

Well, while I was sitting there, enjoying that gin with dinner, my doorbell rang! I looked out my window into the street and was surprised to see my buddy at the door. So I went downstairs and let him in.

Of course I had to offer him a gin and tonic, and and made myself another one, just not to be rude. I provided some snacks as we talked and drank. I had some crackers and sliced sun-dried tomatoes that I doused in olive oil and sea salt. And some fresh walnuts. It worked, tasted good.

Well when we were finishing those drinks, I suggested that we go across the street to Pho Republique for a little more food. I cannot send my friend home tipsy to his wife. So we get there, and talk ourselves into ordering the most-awesome Pho Republique Pu Pu platter. (try it sometime) And we also ordered a pitcher of beer of the really great Whale Tale Pale Ale. Hmm..not what I had expected, but you know what? I was a man, and I rolled with it.

Later that foggy night — the sky was still darkened by some remaining rain clouds (see picture) — I walked my buddy to the near by T station and safely sent him on his way back to the wife.

Boston
Don’t know what was happening. Maybe there was some unspoken September 11th weirdness in the air, but it was a fun night. All is well that ends well. Thanks for the random fun visit!

BBQ in Boston, MA and WaterFire in Providence, RI

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

After some BBQ, we checked out some Waterfire.
They seem to add more floating pylons of fire (and more live opera singers) every few months at Waterfire.

Summer Dinner Party (August 10th) (Artaud “Jet of Blood” poster)

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

Had a great party at my place. Whipped up some summer food (salad with beets, walnuts, croûtons and pulled pork) as well as some adult cocktails — and mixed liberally with smart people.

Jet of Blood
by Antonin Artaud
Directed by David Gammons
a bold block-typography theater poster from the early 1990’s. The play was called “Jet of Blood” by Antonin Artaud, produced at the Loeb Experimental theater, in Cambridge. It was a non-speaking piece, with a group of actors, some video and recorded music. It ran only 17 minutes. Playgoers sat on the floor and some sat on small swings. Each play performance was promptly started and finished by “machine-gun” wielding ushers. The effect was to rush the viewers in and out of theater. Such a short piece can have multiple productions in one night. It was a really fresh experience and it produced a lively night of talk as well as a favorite poster.

Patois (Brunch in Brooklyn)

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

Patois is French style bistro located at 255 Smith street in the Carrol Gardens section of Brooklyn. They also have a garden dining deck in the backyard.

The brunch is a well known event, price fixed at $12 a plate, each plate coming with your choice of unlimited coffee, mimosa, or bloody mary. The eggs dishes are good, and the french toast is more like sauteed bread pudding, ludicrously good with bananas.

Prepare to wait in line if you aren’t there when they open…
