“Fake Empire” by The National & Obama Campaign

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

I don’t like hearing about great concerts that I missed months ago with out knowing about it. whoa, arrgh, darn.

The National, was at BAM in late Feb…

But this song is  so good that it is actively being used in the Barrack Obama campaign. “YES WE CAN”. The campaign remove the lyrics because of the dark-ish content. But the effect is equally elegiac for a sad-lame-duck presidency, and evocative of a possible “Obama restoration”. It’s sad and happy. It is like gourmet salt on top a sugary brownie, so wrong but also tasty-weird.

At any rate, the lyrics are really good as well. But the lyrics are darker than any campaign could endure, so they use just the instrument tracks. The song does work as a positive soundtrack, but also and as a political & personal song. All the best songs have more than one meaning. It’s one quality that allows them to stay fresh over the years.

FAKE EMPIRE

The National

Stay out super late tonight
picking apples, making pies
put a little something in our lemonade and take it with us
we’re half-awake in a fake empire
we’re half-awake in a fake empire

Tiptoe through our shiny city
with our diamond slippers on
do our gay ballet on ice
bluebirds on our shoulders

we’re half-awake in a fake empire
we’re half-awake in a fake empire

Turn the light out say goodnight
no thinking for a little while
lets not try to figure out everything at once
It’s hard to keep track of you falling through the sky
we’re half-awake in a fake empire
we’re half-awake in a fake empire

I like the apple-pie line and the overall optimism. I hope to do some more volunteering for the campaign later in the summer.

I really liked this, a really good concert DVD. Not only a fantastic and fun performance, and a great sound recording as well.

The “Violent Femmes” sing about dissolution and not getting any, so so well. Some casual fans actually think that their songs are their lives, many of us see through that. Also, another band the “Hold Steady” sing about getting hammered all the time. Some of their fans believe that that is their reality as well. But others see them as normal people. It’s funny that some people can get so wrapped up in art. Watching too much TV or browsing too many pages can flip out people, Id imagine.
But, if you liked their music, do take a moment to watch the Violent Femmes DVD, it’s a great recorded concert in a tight space.

Dan Deacon at Mass Art

I like my pictures even though I have to work my little funky-junky camera to get decent shots. Then I posted them here in a dithered png format, which doesn’t help quality. I hope that you enjoy just the same…

The fun Rude Mechanical Orchestra performed at Exit Art’s great “Love War Sex” opening. Among the sobering artwork of war and domination- there was video, wallpaper of burning oil fields, reports from the effects of war on people, video discussions of weaponry, decommissioned guns and artillery items. I liked the strong Guerra de la Paz pieces. The stories of war experiences enlarged and hung on the walls were depressing, but when humans love war (as the art installation seems to argue, albeit weakly), why not rage-on bro? Really, seriously though, we need to end this wasteful and shameful “war” at some point soon.
The gallery was also providing free beer and wine. But some gallery goers cannot handle themselves at all. At one point, a staggeringly drunk goof crept up and slid an empty bottle into an artillery barrel. Funny for a second, but seriously some people just shouldn’t mix their beer and artillery. It was a good show, regardless the dysfunctional chump factor. I would also see the Rude Mechanical Orchestra again. I should have bought their CD.

“Lady Chatterley” at the Brattle Theater

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

LADY CHATTERLEY tells the story of a passion that is both innocent and subversive – one that transcends, without ever ignoring, class and social conventions. As Constance and Parkin nourish their mutual love, both enter into a radical realm where nature, sex and romance merge into one powerful experience. Winner of 5 Cesar Awards (the French ‘Oscar’), including Best Picture and Best Director.

Lady Chatterley (2006)
The first hour was tedious and creaky, but the styling picked up as the spring arrived. Nice little touches (like noticing grass moving in the wind, motorized wheelchair scene and the way the characters treat each other) don’t much change what amounts to just another remake.

Ate some bi bim bop and saw some fun live music afterwards.

Mark Morris – Mozart Dances (Lincoln Center)

Friday, August 17th, 2007

…during the Mostly Mozart series at the Lincoln Center.

Mark Morris Dance Group performed against three Mozart pieces (which I will have to transcribe from the program.) — the dancing was structured but lively – fairly soothing, evocative of old dances of the time. Nothing frenetic.

I never expected to actually hear Emanuel Ax play piano, so this was a double treat. The orchestra and Emanuel Ax filled the hall, and the music was really the star of the night. During intermission, my friend quietly coughed and it echoed and softly returned to us. A nice first time in this hall. Most halls I hang out in I just see talky theater, not rich music.
