Dim Sum, and other amazing  meals in Hong Kong

The morning started out with tasty Dim Sum. Lunch was a fantastic Vietnamese spicy beef stew and dinner was amazing Indian food, found in a hidden walkup in TST. All was amazing and all was very affordable. I like this town already.

Kowloon Cultural District – “Our Life in West Kowloon II” exhibit

Went to an exhibit that was closing this weekend. The building was evicted and is being redeveloped, so organizers filled each floor with photographs and installations that highlighted how the living conditions are for poorer residents. One room housed twenty people, all strangers. And another room had one of the infamous cage homes (basically a cage a large as a simple twin-sized bed). It could be called home and locked up when not around. Hong Kong has been getting rid of the Bed cages, but from what I was told they do still exist. The organizers where chronicling the way people live in Kowloon, not the disappearing building. “The spirit of Sham Shui Po exists in the people and their lifestyles, not the buildings..”

Another item that is disappearing from the Hong Kong streetscapes are the individualistic letter boxes.

Hungry Ghost Festival, Temple

The burning of paper figures are helpful to warding off the hungry spirits. I like this temple shot of 14 day incense coils and the paper maché horse in front of the temple.

Garbage Island = Plastic in your food chain

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Watch this web video documentary about a floating island of garbage.
very affecting look at how polluted our oceans have become. Loads stringy molecules of decomposing plastic are floating in most of the ocean. These pollutants are being ingested by the fish, and other wildlife, and perhaps even you and I. Do we have to start worrying about plastic level in our sushi now, like we woory about mercury?

Mini-redesign of website

My Mini web redesign

I’m writing this in July, 2008…

back in December 2007, I stopped blogging/writing posts, and did not get back to it until July 2008. That’s a long time without updates. I did however keep notes of things I wanted to blog about when I had the time. I still don’t really have the time , I feel that I must refresh a few things. I have only changed a couple small items and some headers in the last 6 months… but I haven’t paid any attention to the website or written anything new.

Anyway, around the beginning of this year, I changed one of the wordpress headers, to “Blogging with a quickness”. Or something like “2008 with a quickness” with the anticipation of making a lot of fresh updates in the coming months. Well that never happened. It’s been more like “blogging with a slowness” since nothing has happened here for 6 months.

While it’s a dated term, the street term “with a quickness” means something, in a street sense. However, my context is from college, where a buddy’s law school roommate was a African-American man, hailing from Philadelphia, he introduced me to the term.
He liked to reply to various questions with it.

“Ready for the movies?”
“with a quickness!”

“Did you remember the pizza?”
“with a quickness!”

This writing kinda makes him seem really dumb, but I liked him and he was one of the nicest and coolest guys.

Anyway, like I said, it’s now July.

Also I’ve written some controversial posts, regarding the economy, housing, Chris McCandless’s mental illness, various other things that catch my interest. But I want people to think, not get angry.

At any rate, I also had some provocative images of bright orange fires, and bright orange type. (Currently There are still many fires burning in California, and environmentalists predict more fire prone dry scrub-land in the coming decade. It’s useful to mindful of this. Bu I also liked the orange and it fit my theme.)

I also had used terms like “with a quickness” and “smack down” in geeky ways. I can imagine that these items can be taken wrongly as well. So I’ve redesigned the site just a little bit to be less visually provocative (not that it was much to begin with.) But I don’t have time to totally do the “complete redesign”. I want to add a video page at that time as well, ok.

So, here are my action items.

  • Replaced the orange type, with aloe-vera green color.
  • Replaced the images of fire, with cool green bars.
  • Removed the term “with a quickness”
  • Removed the literary-sourced term “Inferno”
  • Will be searching for other potentially inferred “angry tropes” or street-lingo for removal.
  • I will try to blog fresh content again in August, after a few more projects are completed.
  • However, I won’t be toning down my gentle absurdities…

So, yes, it’s a lot more bland, but it’s ok.

But after 6 months of no real writing, it needed a change anyway. I hope to come up with a better design, in the autumn.

Anyway.. For now, gentle readers, please just enjoy what it is… and let’s all get back to our careers and outdoor swimming.

Apple WWDC 2007

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

I’m not going to write much about the world wide developer conference here, except to say that I’m enjoying meeting people and learning more technical items about the Mac OS X platform. I’m happy to finally see the Mac market share start to increase year after year, after a few years in the wilderness. Really enjoy the smart crowd, and what I’ve learned about Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and Leopard server. A smart small, mid sized organization can really get a lot of power and bang for the buck by deploying Leopard server.

And it’s a bold and confident company that introduces their web browser on their competitor’s platform. Today Apple introduced a beta of Safari on the Windows XP/Vista platform, with strong claims of performance superiority over IE7 and Firefox. I’ll have to install Safari on my PC soon.

Anyway, more absorbing info to be gleaned tomorrow…

Bay to Breakers 2007, 12K road race

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

What a great run with perfect San Francisco weather, sunny and not too warm.

And we had our goals this year, including having our names published in the local newspaper. It might not seem like an accomplishment, to be included as one of the first 10,000 people to finish a road race, but then you have to realize that there were 60,000 “runners”.

At the starting line: Claire, Holden, Julie.
