Sleeper train to Guilin, China

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Begin the begin. Now starts the next leg of the awesome journey. Crossed the border into the People’s Republic of China. Border documents, Tsingtao beer on the train. (The logos and t-shirt slogans found here are refreshing and often goofy-hip.)Tsingtao beer: Olympic 2008 beer can slogan: Passion, Dreams & Success! (aka beer beer beer)

As the train rolled north and past the Guangzhou factory region, I saw trash camps and plots of wasted land. At one point, in the distance, we could see dire plumes of dark factory smoke rise up into the stratosphere as the was sun was setting. It’s an area worth exploring again, to more fully come to grip with our increasing impact on this planet. (Yes. More pictures to come..)

Come travel with me, fellow seekers!!….

Yangsho, Guilin, Chickens, Geese, ducks, hot weather, the beautiful Li River.. and more, tomorrow…

Macau, China. Cirque du Soliel “Zaia”

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Took the hydro ferry for a nice day trip to Macao. The weather is great and this is a cool set of islands. Coloane has a relaxing beach of black sand, perfect swimming. Saw some highway signage that had been ripped from the ground from a prior typhoon.

Macau is becoming the Asian version of Las Vegas gambling haven. The large hotels that shoot skyward and many are still under construction, are a bit disturbing.
But went and saw Cirque du Soliel’s new show called “Zaia” in the Venetian Macao. It’s about a little girl’s dream /journey into space, where she to gains a better perspective on her and humanity’s relationship to Earth’s environment. A perfect story for a polluted part of the world, no?

Small review and a strictly tourist pictures from Macau, soon.

This place is way too opulent, but a great show. I’ll write more about it soon.

did they spare any expense when building this place? It’s sort of ironic that it is so over the top while the “Zaia” show is about being more in touch with our natural environment.

Google maps has me near Fabiane’s Café in Wiliamsburg NYC.

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Yo friends.. file this under “fun”…

I was captured by GOOGLE MAPS camera-truck.

Earlier this spring, before headed to the client, I was having a breakfast outside the Brazilian bakery, Fabiane’s Café in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY — as the Google maps truck rolled by.

I looked up and said “Huh-Huh??, are those cameras on a pickup truck!?”

The Google pickup has large wide-angle cameras attached to its front, sides and its truck-bed.
The camera in the truck-bed is mounted on a tripod, a bit higher than the truck’s roof-line.
The truck was accompanied by a loud motorcycle, which is what triggered me to look up from my quick coffee.

Honestly, I’d prefer not to have the picture taken, but really I’m too blurry to be recognized on the bench..
I guess, that’s life in a surveillance-age, everyone gets photographed.

FYI The pictures change as you roll down the street..
Check out the LOVE BUS (with Praying Gandhi and a funny red love sofa on the top) found in front of the bakery. as you roll down Bedford Ave, up to the intersection.
Bring your little P.O.V. man to the CENTER of the intersection… you will notice, as you stroll the street, that the parked cars will change/disappear as Google makes image editing choices….

GOOGLE MAPS

So, map this

at http://maps.google.com
After mapping the location, active STREET VIEW.
Move down Bedford Ave (by click-dragging-forward) until you get to North 5th Street.
The street image will redraw as you move forward.

and roll up onto the intersection (past the Love/Gandhi Bus),
and stop in the intersection
and rotate to the Right, 90°.
Look at bench.

I’m blurry guy sitting on the bench in front of the bakery, near the OneWay sign, under the Red awning.

Pretty Whacky world…

PS:

So, since it has been blurred-out, there’s no way to confirm that this is me unless you had the highres file.
Google blurs-out faces and license plates.
I happen to think it is, because I experienced the truck.
Google obviously takes multiple pictures and stitches them together for each street,
And even though this was a sunny day, there is no guarantee that this picture will remain at this location.
Peace.

We are all becoming ghosts in the google-machine!

Long day in Williamsburg…

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

I’ve been working a lot in the NYC area, this year, and am enjoying working with a great client. Sometimes I also spend weekends, hanging out with friends, this was a long day, that started off spotting a cool red truck.

Then meeting up with some friends in Jamaica Bay, on long island. A fun place to relax and get away from the city. They had already toured an inactive airport hanger. They met retired aeronautical fans who were proudly refurbishing an older airplane. They are not going to fly this plane, but they just want to restore it for tours. I had never been, until I was invited to go fishing. Here’s a shot of two handsome fishermen trying not to cross rods.

None of us caught any fish, but maybe some day…. HOOK LINE AND SINKER! I’ll keep it, yeah!

Then a friend was having a party on Troutman Street in Bushwick, sometimes called “Eastern Williamsburg”, by some fancy hipsters and also by hopeful real estate developers. So, a few other friends headed over to the art related party. Took some pictures of people. After that winded down, we went to another party in the same building, where I took some more pictures while jumping into the air. Also took some atmospheric shots like this one of a Bushwick watertower.

Start every day with appreciation. And end every day with appreciation. The world is full of nooks and crannies to explore. Just like New York City. So much going on!

China and the Environment

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

A good series of radio shows this week, all regarding China, and all broadcast from China.

The terrible story behind the story of China’s economic boom is the astounding environmental devastation that has come with it. China’s air, China’s rivers, even China’s seas, are deadly and dying. Half a billion Chinese do not have access to safe drinking water.

Problem is, the boom and the environmental crisis are two sides of the same coin — and growth-hungry China doesn’t want to let that coin go…

For three decades now, the number one goal of China has been hyper-growth and development. More towers — like those going up in Shanghai — more factories, more power plants, more coal. And in growth China has succeeded. But the price has been something approaching environmental catastrophe. Can China stop the spiral? It’s not clear.

Garbage Island = Plastic in your food chain

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Watch this web video documentary about a floating island of garbage.
very affecting look at how polluted our oceans have become. Loads stringy molecules of decomposing plastic are floating in most of the ocean. These pollutants are being ingested by the fish, and other wildlife, and perhaps even you and I. Do we have to start worrying about plastic level in our sushi now, like we woory about mercury?

Memorial in Salem MA

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

One beautiful November morning… walking to the memorial brunch gathering for the friends of Paul’s ‘dash’… It is nice that flag is flying half mast, though likely coincidental.

Paul, in the year I knew you, you left a strong impression on me – You were the type of man that I would have learned much from, if I spent more time around you. I’m fortunate that you were bored, and came out of retirement, a second time no less, or I would never have met you and experienced your strong creative energy, humane humor, vast knowledge and kindness..
