Wintergrass 2007 (Tacoma WA)

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

Great vibe, great modern bluegrass and olde-time Americana music. Hell yes I’d do it again.

Wintergrass 2007 - Stage

Fantastic down to earth performers from all over the country singing the shit out of standards and heartful originals. They also ran all types of workshops from banjo, dobro, harmonica, guitar, fiddle and of course mandolin. I saw tons of kids running around with their instruments. Hung out with my aunt, enjoyed good tunes and learned about the “Uncle Earl”. People were strumming and stomping it out all over the hotel and convention center – the mood was full of interaction. I wish I had my guitar with me, because it would have been cool to go to a workshop.

And guys — you are the team I want to party with tonight!… I’ve never seen so many Harmonicas.

Seattle, WA next stop Alaska

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

Finally landed in Seattle after a multiple hour Jet Blue delay in Boston. Will spend a few days here, then will fly to Alaska in what is usually the coldest month of winter. No problem.

Chabon’s new book

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

When Norman Mailer was interviewed on ONPOINTRADIO, and asked why he chose to write about the Devil and his project “Adolf Hitler”, in his latest book “The Castle in the Forest”, he responded that there were very few interesting things left un-explored by novelists. He mentioned that some writers were so out of ideas, that they were taking their show on the road to Alaska…

Was he making a humorous sideways comment on Michael Chabon’s new book “The Yiddish Policeman’s Union“? I too am skeptical when writers try relocating their stories and transplanting their unique voices into my home state’s clothes. I’m not sure that I’d like this book, and from the outtakes I’ve read in a magazine, I’m not likely to pick it up.

But, if he needs a new direction, I think that Chabon’s next book should be set in outer space on the USS Enterprise. He can have his pick of any of that proud ship’s generations. The USS Enterprise is also chock-full of “What-ifs” and failed romances of the uniformed folk, just like Chabon’s imagined “Alaska.” Plus, in space the Policemen and women get to wear phasers! How cool is that? I expect sales would skyrocket.
