An Event Apart – Boston

Monday, March 26th, 2007

Cool little two day seminar on web standards with Zeldman and crew’s markup gestalt. Learned a good deal, particularly about how to handle projects. However, I can do with out Molly H. rehashing her old slides and worn out stories.

FAT PIG
by Neil Labute

Another cool Neil Labute play produced in Boston a year after playing in nyc. I saw the SpeakEasy Stage Company perform another Neil Labute play, “The Shape of Things” a few years ago and it was a knock out.

“Fat Pig” asks the question can we love something/somebody, regardless what the society pushes us towards… It’s a funny ride but he play’s answer is poignant “no.” sorry to spoil it, but it is worth seeing…

The entire cast in “Fat Pig” was great. I saw Laura Latreille perform in both “Fat Pig and “The Shape of Things” and hope to see her work again. James Ryen was a surprisingly confident presence, but seemed not totally synced with the rest of the cast.

Metheny-Mehldau at the Opera House (Boston)

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

I like hearing Brad Mehldau’s piano playing with his trio, and have caught them before in Boston. Not sure what I would think of Pat Metheny as I don’t follow him or his career. You know what though? Metheny is a kick-butt guitar player. At times, Metheny came off a bit over indulgent, perhaps earning the tired gaze of Mehldau — but he can play some guitar.

Total Lunar Eclipse on March 3rd 2007

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

The March night was fairly clear and the smattering of clouds interrupted the eclipse only a few times.

I was busy drinking tequila, talking and watching it from a roof top in Manhattan. What a cool night.

But someone was alert and kind enough to post an animation of the eclipse on Wikipedia.

So here’s the link, jump and watch the eclipse.

The next two total lunar eclipses are August 28th 2007 and February 21th 2008. After that, they become partial and penumbral until 2010.

“All That I Will Ever Be” by Alan Ball

Saturday, March 3rd, 2007

“All That I Will Ever Be”
play by Alan Ball
directed by Jo Bonney
Presented by the New York Theater Workshop

Feb 2007, March 2007

This was the first play written by Alan Ball since the conclusion of the HBO’s “Six Feet Under” series. It’s a strange play about self definition (and fluid redefinition) taken to the extreme — it eventually destabilizes the protagonist. However, he ends up living his life on new honest terms and challenging others to do the same. Talky, witty and at times personally scathing.

New York Theater Workshop Great place. Solid programs.
